The rupee maintained modest recovery in relation to the dollar on Friday in the process of trading activity, dealers said. The rupee picked up 10 paisas versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 138.75 and Rs 138.78 respectively, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee also managed to maintain upward trend in terms of the dollar, picking up 20 paisas for buying and selling at Rs 138.70 and Rs 139.20 respectively, they said. The rupee also gained about 70 paisas against the euro for buying and selling at Rs 156.60 and Rs 158.30 respectively, they said.

In the final Asian trade, Sterling scaled an 11-week high on Friday after The Sun reported that Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party has privately decided to offer conditional backing for Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal next week.

The euro gained 0.1 percent to $1.1321, although longer term prospects look bleak for the single currency. On Thursday, the European Central Bank provided the latest warning about Europe's dimming outlook, forecasting weaker-than-expected growth in the near term.

The dollar index, a gauge of its value versus six major peers, fell 0.19 percent to 96.41.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 71.080, the greenback was at 4.134 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was available at 6.773 in relation to the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee registered appreciation in process of trading against the greenback in the local currency market on Friday.

Following lack of buyers' interest in the market, the greenback improved its worth and ended for buying and selling at Rs 138.50 and Rs 139.50 against the previous closing trend of Rs 138.70 and Rs 139.80 respectively, local currency dealers said.

On the contrary, the local currency failed to hold its strength as it depreciated its earlier recoveries. The pound's buying and selling rates rose from Thursday's closing of Rs 179.80 and Rs 181.00 to Rs 180.40 and Rs 181.70 respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee recovered 25 paisas against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Friday.

The dollar opened at Rs 139.05 (buying) and Rs 139.15 (selling) against last rate of Rs 139.30 (buying) and Rs 139.40 (selling). It closed at Rs 139.05 (buying) and Rs 139.1 5(selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold was Rs 67,800 (selling) and Rs 67,5000 (buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
